South-eastern Jutland - the historic part of Denmark
The south-eastern stretch of coast is a true Eldorado for both children and adults. All kinds of beach and water-sport activities are practised here. The many sandy beaches are very child-friendly because of the shallow and calm water. Behind the coast the landscape is characterized by woods, preserved plantation landscapes, lakes and streams. The 'mountain' Himmelbjerget by the lakes of Silkeborg provides you with Denmark's highest view. Here you can enjoy the beautiful nature from a canoe or from one of the many boats that sail in the area. Skamlingsbanken by Binderup is a scenic nature area, and with its 113 metres above sea level also the highest point in south eastern Jutland. Als is absolutely worth visiting too. Als is regarded as one of Denmark's most beautiful and green islands.
Culture and history
A great part of the Danish history took place in south-eastern Jutland. The area shows many traces of relics, i.a. from the old wars, which were fought for the mother country Denmark. The mill Dybbøl Mølle (originating from 1744) was previously located in the middle of a military area and today, it is converted into a museum with pictures and memories from the battlefield. The stones Jellingestenene with their runic inscriptions originate from the viking age and are called 'Denmark's birth certificate'. The girl Egtvedpigen was discovered in 1921 and is the best preserved find from the bronze age in Denmark. A museum in sit informs about the rare find. The castle Sønderborg Slot was restored in the baroque stile and contains i.a. a museum that pictures the history of southern Jutland. South east Jutland is, however, much more than relics from the past. You will also be met with modern architecture, Danish design as well as lively and cultural commercial towns her.
Activities
The area offers all sorts of different activities, among other things swimming baths, aqua parks and more golf courses. Along the coast swimming, beach volley, yachting, windsurfing and water-skiing are popular activities. The 800 km long bicycle track 'Østersøruten' leads through south eastern Jutland. The many, idyllic streams and lakes of the hinterland offer good fishing opportunities.
Cities/Towns
All over south eastern Jutland you will find many middle-sized and interesting towns, which offer a rich commercial and cultural life. During the summer months a number of open-air arrangements, concerts and festivals, featuring world-famous musicians, are arranged here. Juelsminde: The town is situated on the peninsula Juelsminde-halvøen - a place of outstanding natural beauty. The cosy town offers restaurants, shops and a marina with a charming harbour atmosphere. Visit Kolding with its cosy old streets, green recreation areas, museums, art galleries, theatres, evocative squares with restaurants and cafés, a rich music and night life, the lake Slotssøen and the more than 700 year old royal castle Koldinghus. Fredericia: The old fortress town is 350 years old. The town is scenically located by the Little Belt and is surrounded by the best-preserved ramparts in Northern Europe.
Worth a visit
AQUA in Silkeborg is the largest freshwater aquarium in northern Europe - www.ferskvandscentret.dk. The former royal castle Koldinghus is today an interesting museum - www.koldinghus.dk. LEGOLAND offers speed, excitement and experiences for everyone - www.lego.com. Go on safari in Givskud Zoo - www.givskudzoo.dk. At the Orion Planetarium explore the universe. Sommerland Syd is an amusement park with action and water world at Tinglev. The island Endelave, situated in the Kattegat about 10 km from the shore, is characterized by a lovely nature, which invites bicycle trips and walks at all times of the year.
